Roadtripping Out West- Day 1/Intro

Day 1

The snow is coming down hard and the wind is pulling my car this way and that. I’m in the middle of Pennsylvania, and I have to get out of my car every 30 minutes to scrape the ice off my windshield. I’m on hour 11 of a 14-hour drive, and every minute counts as I chase down the sun, trying to race the fading of the light to get out of the mountains and snow before it’s dark out.

It’s my fault for deciding to leave today, I knew this was a possibility, but I also knew that I have driven through horrific snow conditions before. I would outrun the worst of it by driving south through Pennsylvania instead of through Buffalo, and at the end of the day, I trusted my intuition, and I wanted to get moving West as soon as possible. While I was cursing myself for that at times, I ultimately made it out of the snow in one piece, exhausted, but who isn’t after 14 hours of driving?

Day 1 of driving to the American West from Boston, MA:

Boston to Richmond, Indiana

14.5 hours of total driving time

Early in the morning , as the sun comes up in Connecticut

In the next series of posts, I will share my stories, thoughts, and experiences from a two-week road trip I took while I was in between jobs in February.

This was a mostly solo journey and an adventure I have been craving for quite some time now. In these two weeks, I drove to

  • Santa Fe, NM

  • Prescott, AZ

  • Cedar City, UT

  • Jackson, WY

And back to Boston from there. I have plenty of words to share, but I’ll try to keep these posts to a reasonable length.

Thank you to those following along and to those who kept me company on long driving days. While I was mostly alone for this trip, I never felt like it. Always just one call away from someone I love, something I am incredibly grateful for.

Anyways…

This first day was a snowy drive from Boston to Indianapolis. I was just getting my feet under me and getting a routine back on the road.

Today I passed through:

  • Massachusetts

  • Connecticut

  • New York

  • New Jersey

  • Pennsylvania

  • West Virginia (extremely briefly)

  • Ohio

  • Indiana

I was both scared and excited as I passed through state lines that day, wondering at all that I would see in the week ahead.

Thank you for reading!
